Dropping an IPad from space notwithstanding, gorilla glass has proven to be an important part of the IPad and IPhone’s design. It helps it to achieve that sleek glass like finish without sacrificing too much in thickness. If you haven’t seen the video above, the IPad survives (probably due to the case from G-Form, but the glass helps).

Corning showed off its Gorilla Glass 2 at CES this year. The new glass is said to be 20% thinner, lighter, while maintaining its sturdy properties. It is also said to produce brighter images.  It’s still unknown whether it will be present in the IPhone 5 or IPad 3 as Apple has an agreement with Corning not to announce their relationship.corning

Part of our on-going ‘wish we were there’ coverage of CES 2012 we’ve compiled a short list of things we’d like to see.  We know, we know, Apple’s not going to be there.  These are gadgets we can use with our Macs/IPads/IPhones that just happen to be pretty cool.

1) Lacie’s 2Big – This guy is big.  We won’t be taking it anywhere but we need to be sure all of our 1080p cat videos are safe.  The 2Big has 2,3, or 4 Tb’s of storage in RAID 0 mode or 4, 6, or 8Tbs in RAID 1 depending on which model.  With an available Thunderbolt connection  we won’t have to wait long to load our cat videos onto other cat video playing capable devices.

2) iOS Controllers / Mods -Fructel’s Gametel Controller:  I don’t particularly like the virtual joypads that a few mobile games have integrated.  Some are better than others but we think Fructel’s Gametel Controller will trump all the virtual solutions.  Granted we still like not having to carry extra accessories, but if we’re at home and have the need to put in a few hours of Muffin Knight this should help us dodge a few critters a little better. Put your IPhone into the snap-ins and connect it via bluetooth and you’re good to go.  Currently, there are at least 100 games that support it. Under $99.  Also see ION’s iCade Mobile.

ION’s iCade Core – This is a scaled down version of the original iCade that also works with the IPhone.  The original is simply awesome for nostalgia factor.  Remember Shaky’s?  Remember the arcades being more fun with pizza grease dripping from your mouth and fingers?  Well, your memories may differ, but the cool factor remains.  Stick your IPad into one of these and you got yourself a mini arcade that plays hundreds of classics.  Now if only I could integrate a coin slot…

3) Parrot Drone 2.0 –  The first version was already pretty cool.   For those that missed the first, it’s a remote controlled ‘copter’ but here’s the twist: It’s controlled by your IPhone.  The 2.0 version has a built in HD camera that shows you your flight in real-time and gives you all the flight data.  It’s a pretty expensive toy at $299, but we’d like to think it’s more of a spy drone minus the military implications.  Warning: neighbors do not take kindly to hovering aircrafts with cameras built into it.

Android manufacturers are jumping into the cloud and streaming business in ways you might recognize.  In conjunction with Samsung,  Movl has released what tries to be an all encomposing solution to media streaming from your devices. straight from Samsung’s Korean site:

The Samsung Smart TV SwipeIt application makes it easy to share photos and videos from your mobile device on your TV!

You can use your Android device to share content over WiFI with the TV. There is no complicated setup, just login with the TV Code and start sharing. Multiple people can share with the same TV at the same time.

In theory, it would work just like Airplay, but on all the major platforms (iOS, BB, Android). As first mentioned here though, Mr. Kumar claims it doesn’t seem like they’re trying to be as encompassing as they claim as they’re missing much of that support in the App for iOS devices. More likely, they are trying to rival Apple in software providing an end-to-end media experience.

Acer on the other side of the Android universe is going after cloud computing services similar to what iCloud does. It unveiled what it calls AcerCloud, a photo and music syncing service that in theory would allow the user to have access to that content on either the Android phone or an Acer pc automatically. In a demo to Forbes it failed to work. Clearly it’s not ready for primetime. Our take: It just works, except when you need it to.

Sales of Mac laptops and desktops have seen very healthy growth this year with several sites reporting double digit growth in sales. In October of last year, CNN Money also reported that sales of Macs rose to 4.89 million units confirming the double digit growth in sales. As the platform gains popularity more and more game developers are becoming open to creating ports to popular games once only available on the PC.

Popular games such as Portal 2 and World of Warcraft have already ported over Mac versions of their popular games and the trend continues.

Enter Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game debuted in Dec. of 2011 and has gained a very large following in a short amount of time. In a press release from swtor.com:

“Already over a million players strong after our Dec 20th launch, The Old Republic has become the fastest growing subscription MMO in the history of our industry,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, General Manager of EA’s BioWare label and Co-Founder of BioWare. “Everyone at BioWare, EA and Lucas Arts is honored – and humbled – by the stellar response from our fans. We’re going to work together closely with our community in the weeks, months and years ahead, continually serving our audience with regular delivery of compelling new features and content!”

We here at EntertheMac.com are big Star Wars fans, and unfortunately there is currently only a Windows version of the game. What options do we have? Thankfully we have a few options. One staffer runs the game under a Windows partition, and personally I run it under a virtual machine. It may not be the optimal setup but there is hope. In an interview posted by Massively, Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk indicates that it’s high on the list of things to do:

“That’s definitely one of the things we’re looking at next. We want to get this launch under our belt and everything stabilized and happy, and then we’ll look at other platforms, and that’s obviously one of the first ones.”

May the porting force be with you Mr. Zeschuk.

Unfortunately, the Mac App store has not gained much traction in terms of gaming, as the top apps seem to be utilitarian apps.   This may change if iOS and Mac OSX are inter-weaved into one eco-system like some have predicted.

dRDM+ by SHAPE Services for IPhone and IPad is simply our favorite remote desktop app to get to our Macs. There’s a ‘Lite’ version and a $9.99 version performance optimized version on Apple’s app store.   This was first released in 2007 and over the years has gotten better and better.  It offers support for both Mac and PC and works on the IPhone 4/s, Touch, 3gs, and the IPad.

There are two major features that sets this app apart from the other remote or vnc  apps on the app store. The first is the ease of use.  The second, is the ability to remote in from anywhere your IPhone or IPad has a decent Internet connection.  Most of RDM+’s competitors only offer connection from within your own network or are way too complicated to setup.  RDM+ on the other hand is very easy to setup, more on this below.

RDM+ offers:

✓ Internet connection is not necessary when connecting within local network
✓ Automatic computer discovery within local network
✓ Direct mouse control: left click, right click, double click, drag and drop, scrolling. Tap and double tap work as click and double click. Pinch to zoom in/zoom out.
✓ Support of standard Windows and Mac hotkeys and ability to create custom hotkeys combinations for various operations with your computer
✓ Unique data compression algorithms decreasing data traffic while keeping fast application performance on 3G / Edge / GPRS connection
✓ Control panel for multimedia features
✓ Direct text input and easy text editing
✓ Shutdown, Log off, Restart commands
✓ Multiple displays support
✓ Landscape/Portrait mode
✓ Free technical support by SHAPE Services team
✓ Free updates

The UI of the app is very simple.  Your finger controls the mouse in very precise motions.  If you slide your finger around the screen, the virtual mouse moves in corresponding directions and when you tap somewhere the host mouse actually clicks on that same spot (1 finger for left click or 2 fingers for right).  While it is correct in that is direct control of the mouse, it doesn’t actually move the mouse of the host computer when you swipe your finger around.  This means that menus don’t pop up on some icons where they normally would when you hover over them.  Still, this solution is superior to the way other apps work where you have to tap on the screen to bring up menus without the direct control of the mouse.

The UI offers just about everything you could need to control your computer and even some shortcuts to speed things up like cut, paste, search files. Even fifty miles away in a Starbucks the UI remains responsive to the taps resulting in fluid control of the host machine. If you’ve tried some of the free apps you understand the importance of this. RDM+ claims it use a “Unique data compression algorithms decreasing data traffic while keeping fast application performance on 3G / Edge / GPRS connection.” to achieve dynamic image quality and operation speed balance.

Setting up RDM

Setting RDM+ up is simple. You get the desktop client here, setup a login account. Copy down or memorize the number. Setup your IPhone/IPad app with that number and login and you’re set. See screenshots below. We were suprised by how easy it was to setup. We did not even need to adjust any firewall settings.

Screenshots

Overall, this app is definetely the best app out there for remote desktop. Until another company can improve upon the user interface and performance even more we will continue to recommend RDM+.
